Starting a food business? Learn the difference between FSSAI Basic Registration, State License, and Central License based on your manufacturing capacity.

Why Every Food Business Needs an FSSAI License

Whether you are launching a cloud kitchen, a local bakery, manufacturing packaged snacks, or simply operating a food delivery app, the law in India is absolute: you cannot operate without a valid license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Printing the 14-digit FSSAI license number on your packaging is mandatory and builds immense consumer trust regarding hygiene and safety.

Which FSSAI License Do You Need?

Applying for the wrong license category can result in heavy fines and immediate business closure. FSSAI licenses are divided into three tiers based on your production capacity and annual turnover:

  • FSSAI Basic Registration: Ideal for petty food business operators, small local dhabas, or home bakers. You need this if your annual turnover is strictly below ₹12 Lakhs.

  • FSSAI State License: Required for medium-sized manufacturers, large restaurants, and distributors. You fall into this category if your annual turnover is between ₹12 Lakhs and ₹20 Crores.

  • FSSAI Central License: Mandatory for large-scale manufacturers, 100% export-oriented units, food importers, and operators working across multiple states. This applies if your turnover exceeds ₹20 Crores annually.

The Licensing Process and Compliance

Obtaining an FSSAI license involves submitting a detailed application through the FoSCoS portal. For State and Central licenses, you must provide extensive documentation, including blueprints of your processing unit, a list of machinery, water testing reports, and a food safety management plan (FSMS).

Navigating food safety regulations can be tedious. Technocrat Oasis handles the entire end-to-end FSSAI licensing process, from determining your exact eligibility tier to drafting the FSMS declarations, ensuring your food business launches legally and safely.
