Scheme Overview & Objective

Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) is a flagship government initiative designed to empower micro‑enterprises and small businesses with collateral‑free loans up to ₹20 Lakhs. Launched to promote entrepreneurship, self‑employment, and financial inclusion, the scheme targets non‑corporate, non‑farm entities engaged in manufacturing, trading, services, and allied agricultural activities. By removing the barrier of security, PMMY enables first‑time entrepreneurs and existing micro‑enterprises to obtain formal credit quickly and at competitive rates.

Key objectives of PMMY include:

  • Facilitating easy access to working capital and expansion finance.
  • Encouraging the creation of sustainable jobs across urban and rural India.
  • Supporting a wide spectrum of sectors such as dairy farming, poultry, food processing, handicrafts, retail, and transport services.
  • Leveraging a broad network of Member Lending Institutions (MLIs) – public and private banks, NBFCs, MFIs, and Small Finance Banks – to ensure nationwide reach.

Eligibility Criteria & Scope

The eligibility framework is deliberately simple to maximise outreach. Applicants must satisfy all of the following conditions:

  • Indian Citizenship: The applicant must be an Indian citizen with a genuine business proposal.
  • Non‑Corporate, Non‑Farm Business: The enterprise should operate as a proprietorship, partnership, or any other eligible micro‑enterprise structure, excluding corporate or farm entities.
  • Eligible Business Activities: Manufacturing, trading, services, food processing, transport, repair, retail, artisanship, and allied agricultural activities (e.g., dairy, poultry, fisheries, beekeeping).
  • Business Purpose: Funds must be used strictly for business‑related purposes – setting up a new venture, purchasing machinery, expanding operations, infrastructure development, or meeting working‑capital needs.
  • Good Credit History: Applicants should have a satisfactory repayment record and must not be classified as wilful defaulters by any financial institution.

There is no upper age limit for the entrepreneur, and both men and women are equally eligible. The scheme also welcomes women entrepreneurs, artisans, shop‑keepers, and self‑employed professionals.

Key Financial & Growth Benefits

PMMY delivers a suite of financial advantages that directly address the pain points of micro‑enterprises:

  • Collateral-free financing removing the need for third-party guarantees.
  • Competitive interest rates offered by participating lending institutions.
  • Flexible repayment tenures extending up to 5 years.
