About Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG)

The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) is the flagship, most prestigious early-stage funding program initiated by BIRAC, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.

Widely acclaimed as the gold standard of early-stage biotech grant funding in Asia, BIG provides up to ₹50 Lakhs in non-dilutive grant-in-aid for 18 months to individual researchers, clinicians, innovators, and early-stage startups to establish proof-of-concept for novel life science inventions.

The scheme covers all domains of biotechnology including Medical Devices, Point-of-Care Diagnostics, Drug Discovery & Biopharma, Agricultural Biotechnology, Industrial Synthetic Biology, Clean Bio-energy, and Veterinary Healthcare.

Administered through 8 specialized BIG Partner institutions across India (such as C-CAMP Bengaluru, Venture Center Pune, IKP Hyderabad, FITT Delhi, and KIIT-TBI Bhubaneswar), BIG grantees gain world-class laboratory infrastructure, clinical immersion, patent protection assistance, and investor demo days.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Eligibility Rule 1

Individual Indian citizens (scientists, researchers, medical doctors, engineers, students) holding a graduate degree in science/technology.

Eligibility Rule 2

DPIIT-recognized Startups incorporated as a Private Limited Company in India under 5 years of existence.

Eligibility Rule 3

The company must have at least 51% of equity shareholding owned by Indian resident citizens.

Eligibility Rule 4

The proposed project must be novel, indigenous, and have a clear pathway to establish proof-of-concept within 18 months.

Eligibility Rule 5

Applicants must choose and apply through one of the 8 designated BIG Partner institutions.

Eligibility Rule 6

The project must fall under biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture, industrial biotech, or clean bio-energy.
