About BIRAC PACE Scheme

The PACE (Promoting Academic Research Conversion to Enterprise) Scheme is a premier translational funding mechanism formulated by BIRAC, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.

Recognizing that world-class scientific discoveries in university laboratories often languish due to a lack of translational capital, PACE bridges the gap between academic discovery and industrial commercialization.

The scheme operates through two tailored mechanisms: Academic Innovation Research (AIR) granting up to ₹50 Lakhs to academic researchers to establish proof-of-concept for commercial scale-up, and Contract Research Scheme (CRS) granting up to ₹50 Lakhs to fund joint academia-industry translational partnerships.

PACE funds critical translational activities including process optimization, scale-up synthesis, formulation development, toxicology studies, and preclinical validation in certified animal models.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Eligibility Rule 1

Faculty / Researchers holding regular positions in recognized Indian academic institutes, universities, or national labs (under AIR track).

Eligibility Rule 2

Academia-Industry Collaborations involving an Indian academic institute and an Indian registered company (under CRS track).

Eligibility Rule 3

The industrial partner in CRS must be incorporated in India with >= 51% Indian shareholding.

Eligibility Rule 4

Must have prior preliminary laboratory data demonstrating scientific feasibility.

Eligibility Rule 5

The project must focus on commercial translation in biopharma, diagnostics, agribiotech, or industrial bio-processes.

Eligibility Rule 6

Must be endorsed by the Head of the Academic Institution and Company Board.
