About BIRAC SPARSH Scheme

The SPARSH (Social Innovation Program for Products: Affordable & Relevant to Societal Health) scheme is a flagship social healthcare initiative launched by BIRAC, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

Engineered to discover, develop, and deploy affordable, accessible biotechnological and medical innovations for vulnerable and underserved populations in India, SPARSH operates across two major tracks: SPARSH Social Innovation Fellowship and SPARSH Project Grant-in-Aid (up to ₹50 Lakhs).

The scheme focuses on high-impact societal healthcare challenges, including maternal and child health, malnutrition, point-of-care infectious disease diagnostics, affordable assistive devices, geriatric care, water purification, and sanitation.

SPARSH Fellows and startups are embedded in Social Innovation Immersion Centres (SIICs) across partner bio-incubators, spending months on ground conducting clinical immersion in rural primary health centres (PHCs) and district hospitals.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Eligibility Rule 1

DPIIT-recognized Startups or Biotech MSMEs incorporated in India under 5 years of existence.

Eligibility Rule 2

Individual innovators and graduates applying for the SPARSH Social Innovation Fellowship.

Eligibility Rule 3

The project must address a clearly identified unmet societal healthcare or nutritional challenge.

Eligibility Rule 4

The proposed technology must be affordable, ruggedized, and suitable for resource-constrained settings.

Eligibility Rule 5

Entity must have at least 51% equity shareholding owned by Indian resident citizens.

Eligibility Rule 6

Applicants must demonstrate commitment to field immersion and public health impact.
