About Mission DefSpace Challenge

Mission DefSpace is a landmark national defence space initiative launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister under the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX), Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with ISRO and IN-SPACe.

The mission aims to develop offensive and defensive space capabilities across 75 critical space challenge domains identified by the tri-services (Army, Navy, Air Force) and the Defence Space Agency (DSA).

Under Mission DefSpace, selected private spacetech startups, MSMEs, and aerospace companies receive non-dilutive grant funding of up to ₹1.5 Crores (under standard iDEX track) and up to ₹10 Crores (under iDEX Prime / DefSpace Prime track) to engineer dual-use and military-grade space assets.

Focus areas include low-earth orbit (LEO) surveillance constellations, space situational awareness (SSA), optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payloads, secure satellite quantum communication, anti-satellite counter-measures, and responsive launch systems.

Who Can Apply? (Eligibility Criteria)

Eligibility Rule 1

DPIIT-recognized Startups, MSMEs, or Indian private companies incorporated in India.

Eligibility Rule 2

The entity must have at least 51% shareholding owned by Indian resident citizens.

Eligibility Rule 3

Must possess demonstrable engineering capability in aerospace, satellite hardware, or geospatial algorithms.

Eligibility Rule 4

Must submit a detailed response addressing specific Mission DefSpace problem statements.

Eligibility Rule 5

The proposed technology must aim for high Technical Readiness Levels (TRL 4 to TRL 7+).

Eligibility Rule 6

Promoters must clear national defence security vetting and background checks.
