Scheme Overview & Objective
India’s startup ecosystem received a historic ₹490 Crore boost through MeitY GENESIS, targeting more than 10,000 technology-driven ventures across Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Launched by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), the programme’s core mission is to accelerate deep-tech innovation, create high-skill jobs, and position India as a global hub for emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, robotics, and semiconductor research.
GENESIS (Gen-Next Support for Innovative Startups) does not merely dispense cash; it blends financial assistance with mentorship, ecosystem linkages, and capacity-building activities. By aligning funding with specific stages of a startup’s lifecycle—ideation, pilot, investment, and deep-tech scaling—the scheme ensures that capital is deployed where it creates the greatest leverage for commercial success.
Eligibility Criteria & Scope
Only startups that meet a concise set of government-defined conditions can tap into GENESIS. The eligibility framework is deliberately narrow to safeguard public funds while fostering high-impact innovation.
- DPIIT Recognized Startup: The venture must hold a valid recognition certificate from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Startup India initiative.
- MeitY Startup Hub Registration: Applicants must be registered with the MeitY Startup Hub (MSH) or be an existing beneficiary of any MeitY-run programme.
- Indian Promoter Ownership: At least 51% of the equity must be owned by Indian promoters, as per the Companies Act, 2013.
- Full-Time CEO: The startup must have a dedicated, full-time Chief Executive Officer responsible for day-to-day operations.
- Market-Ready Innovation: For the Pilot, Investment, and Deep-Tech categories, the product or technology must be market-ready or demonstrably viable for scaling.
These criteria apply uniformly across all funding categories, ensuring a level playing field for tech-centric ventures that are ready to commercialize.
Key Financial & Growth Benefits
GENESIS offers a tiered financial structure that aligns capital with the maturity of the startup. Below is a concise breakdown of the funding caps per category:
